Modern critter Cat Scratcher

Posted: 09 Jun 2011 07:34 AM PDT

If you have a cat then you're probably well informed about their habits. Cats are lovely creatures that most of the time like to sleep, to cuddle, to eat and to purr. But there's also another characteristic that people often forget. It's their scratching habit. They always ruin furniture and rugs with their sharp claws.

So if you want to avoid all that, if it's not already to late, you can purchase a scratcher similar to this one. It will help your cat to keep doing what it likes best while giving your sofa or armchair a break. Of course, there's also the risk that your cat will not like the scratcher and then all the effort will be in vain.

However, this particular cat scratcher from Modern critter was especially created for this type of situations. It mimics the cat's favorite places, like the carpet of the sofa. It has a curved shape and a pattern similar to that of a rug. It looks very attractive. If I were a cat I would probably like to plant my claws in that scratcher.Cats like to be in the center of attention so you'll want to place this scratcher somewhere at sight and not hidden because the cat usually likes to scratch things when someone is looking just to make you angry.

How landscape trees can increase the value of your home

Posted: 09 Jun 2011 04:06 AM PDT

Home improvements to increase the value of your home can be costly. One simple and inexpensive way to increase your home's value and lower your energy costs is by planting landscape trees. Besides improving the look of your yard, trees offer many benefits. And unlike other types of home improvements, trees don't go out of style or need to be updated for a more modern look.

Boosting the value of your property really is as easy as planting a tree. According to the USDA Forest Service, "Healthy, mature trees add an average of 10 percent to a property's value." Be sure to choose trees that grow well in your area of the country.

Local power companies often offer free and low cost trees to their customers. Learn how to properly care for and maintain the trees you plant to gain the most benefits. Free or inexpensive trees can be very immature, meaning you need to wait awhile to see a return on your investment. For the cost $30 or less per tree you can obtain trees suited for your area from local home improvement or discount stores.

Depending on the type of tree you select, you could see an increase in your property values within three to five years. Adding trees to your yard won't just increase your property values. Landscape trees also save you money by decreasing your energy costs. The US Department of Agriculture reports one young, healthy tree provides the cooling effect of 10 room-sized air conditioners running for 20 hours per Also recommended to keep the grass in good conditions using special tools like a lawnmower at height of 5-6 cm to allow faster drying of the soil and 7-8 cm in dry periods as it reduces water loss through evaporation.

The benefits of using trees to lower cooling costs in the summer might be obvious since trees provide shade. You may not realize trees can help save on your winter heating costs, too. By creating a windbreak with trees, a homeowner can save between 10 and 20 percent on their heating costs.

Planting a tree takes less than a day (in fact, a few hours, at most), and within a few years, you will start seeing the returns – not only that, but you'll also be proud of the big, beautiful green tree in front of your house.

Most expensive country house in the UK now on sale

Posted: 09 Jun 2011 03:08 AM PDT

In UK, like in all other countries, properties become more and more expensive as they come closer to the center of the city and near big cities, too. Well, this time I am going to speak about a country house in UK that was listed for the fabulous price of $143.5 some years ago, but it has recently been re-listed with a reduced price and then sold for l £75million (about $123 million). Pretty good for a country house, right? Well, don’t think they sold it for too much until you see the pictures.

This real estate is considered to be the most expensive country house in the United Kingdom. It is called Updown Court and it is situated in  the Surrey village of Windlesham. It is useless to say that this estate is really huge, as you can see from the photos and it shows a combination of luxury, tradition and latest technology that makes it worth the price.

Apart from the 103 rooms and the 50,000 square feet of land occupied, you have everything you could possibly want there: a bowling alley, five swimming pools, a squash court, a tennis court, a wine cellar, a big home theater and a panic room. But the detail that really blew my mind is the driveway that is made entirely of marble and is worth $6 million. How about that?

LAB candleholder by The Swedes

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 08:32 PM PDT

When you think of candleholders you probably imagine a romantic dinner with the loved one, in an obscure light, with some romantic and simple candleholders and some candles of course. Well, for The Swedes this image is completely different.

Who says candleholders have to be romantic? They can very well be more technical or playful. LAB is a design that surprises the user by its unusual shape and complicated lines. It's actually a very fun design that was inspired by the cartoonish images of the science laboratory. It reminds me of Dexter's laboratory and his annoying sister Dee-Dee. This is design that attempts to change the perspective about candleholders. There are several versions for this candleholder design and each one is different. It's not it's so difficult to make a random choice of lines and put them together in the form of a candleholder.

Anyway, for those who are not the adepts of romantic and mushy dinners and are a little more fun and exotic, this is a design that could make a good choice. It's not extraordinary beautiful or impressive, but it's different and fun. Personally I don' think I would choose something like this, but maybe someone else thinks differently. Maybe there are persons that share a certain affinity with the idea of science laboratory and everything that this concept implies. It this case it could make an interesting gift.

Parasite office in Moscow by za bor architects

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 07:48 PM PDT

In case you were wondering how come the companies seem to always find the space for their offices, you should know that this is not always easy. Sometimes architects have to use some unconventional techniques in order to make this come true.

It's the case of a new office building in Moscow that was designed by za bor architects. The building is still a concept and it's going to be finalized in a few years. The most interesting thing about this office building is that it's going to be built between two buildings without touching the ground. It's definitely a new concept and I'm still not sure how safe this will be but it's going to be interesting to see the final result. This new idea allows the usage of free spaced between buildings for creation of new structures like offices. Since the new structure will be floating, it's doesn't block the court yard access or the street. It's a parasite building, as the name very well describes it.

This particular office building will be a three-floor structure with an accessible roof area, divided with modular floor panels. It's a very daring project and it could be a revolutionary idea if it actually works. This could solve a lot of problems. Of course it's going to be a little scary at first to be in a building that is simply attached to the surrounding structures but if the project is as safe as it claims to be this feeling will disappear.{found on archdaily}

How To Remove Texture From the Wall?

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 05:12 PM PDT

Textures are often created on the walls in order to create a different look. Varied types of materials are employed to create textures such as stucco, joint compound and paint. Though the creation of textures on the walls is not a difficult job, but removing the textures from the wall is definitely a cumbersome task.  Besides being a tedious, removing texture from the wall is a time consuming as well as messy work. Make sure to squeeze out several hours for the task for a standard size room and ask a friend to help you out.

1) First of all, remove furniture pieces from the room and employ drop sheets to cover the floor. If certain furniture pieces cannot be removed, cover them with drop sheet as the floor.

2) Take a paint try and empty one fourth bottle of wallpaper removal into it. Fill the rest of the paint tray with warm water such that the roller can be completely dipped into it.

3) Dip the paint roller in wallpaper removal and water mixture, and begin applying the mixture on a three feet section of a wall.

4) Allow the solution to soak in the textured wall. If required, do not hesitate to repeat the mixture applying process. Patiently wait for the texture to soften as it might take ten to fifteen minutes.

5) Once the texture appears softened,   take an eight inch dry scrapper and shave off the texture from the wall. Use the scrapper from different angles and apply varied amount of pressures as necessary to remove the softened texture. Make sure to do it in a careful manner so that drywall underneath the texture does not get damaged.

6) Repeat the above mentioned process for three feet section walls until the wall is completely clean shaved. If you find any sort of high spots, employ a sanding screen to smooth it out. When using the sanding screen, ensure not to sand the dry wall.

7) Employ a large and damp sponge to efficiently clean the wall from texture pieces and dust particles. Be sure to rinse the sponge frequently.

8) Lastly, fill cuts, nicks and nail holes with the compound and smooth it with the help of a sand paper. Your wall is now free from texture, and you can use it for papering or painting.{picture from}

Futuristic Transparent Furniture by Poltrona Frau

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 02:10 PM PDT

Future means evolution, change and new perspective. A futuristic item will always surprise you with something new that will change your perspective of viewing things. It may bring a new extravagant image, an innovative material or a new technique.

Most of theses futuristic items usually have an image which seems to resemble a space ship or of something related to the outer space. Their design is usually dynamic and the materials used for their production tend to be sparkling, transparent and closer to a silver nuance. For example, many of them are made of stone, glass, steel or plastic.

Poltrona Frau participated to an exhibition where they exposed sofas and armchairs with a futuristic design. These products were with covers, made from transparent PVC materials and fillers. Their transparency and silver nuance make you imagine the interiors of those fantastic space ships that appear in SF movies and their crew that has silver costumes or the astronauts who travel out of space and whose expeditions make us be closer to the unknown space.

These pieces of furniture are perfect for futuristic interior designs and their transparent design makes them attractive to those who are curious and fascinated by the interior structure of these pieces.
